In honor of Mother's Day here is our NYC FIT Mom Editon featuring Personal Trainer and Mother of Bella and Abby, Kyla Cowell. Kyla is a NSCA Certified Personal Trainer, Ironman & Triathlon Athlete, Runner, Nutrition & Transformation Success Coach. She has found her passion by helping others transform their lives through health & fitness.

PS: Kyla, thank you so much for coming down to meet with us!  As a Personal Trainer & Athlete, how does living a fit lifestyle help you and your family?

KC: Continuing to live a fit lifestyle after having kids was non-negotiable for me.  Exercise is my medicine and helps create balance in my life.  Creating “me time” to workout and focusing on my fitness is a necessary physical outlet that allows me to be the best version of myself.  In order to be a great mom and wife, I need to take care of myself.

PS: Yes! Let’s backtrack...  How did you get into fitness and becoming a Personal Trainer?

KC: I danced for 25 years and always led a very active lifestyle.  I remember at a young age telling my mom that when I “retired” from dance, I would open my own gym!  The transition from dancer to a personal trainer just made sense to me and was rather seamless.  The human body has always fascinated me, so when I decided it was time to hang up my dancing shoes, I knew fitness was the field I wanted to pursue. As fate would have it, I met my husband in the gym and we shared the same passion for fitness, health, and helping others

PS: That’s awesome.  What are some of your best accomplishments as both a Coach and an Athlete?

KC: Great question! As a fitness and health coach, I am blessed with the ability to help others make positive changes and transformations in their lives.  Every time I experience someone who I work with have success in their personal wellness journey, I feel a huge sense of accomplishment.

As an athlete, a big moment for myself was completing my 2nd Ironman Triathlon 9 months after my first daughter, Bella was born.  The challenge of finding time to train with a newborn was one in and of itself, but then add in that I was still nursing my baby come race day so I had to take care of motherly duties (pump) in the transition tents between each leg of the race!  This made for a race I will always remember and always be super proud of!

PS: Wow, that’s inspiring!  How have you balanced training and racing while taking care of two young girls?

KC: I have mastered the skill of using my time efficiently!  Gone are the days of 2-hour workouts in the gym.  My girls are young and require a lot of mommy time.  I plan my workouts ahead, focus on my goals, and keep my nutrition on point.

PS: What are your top tips for helping moms stay fit while working and taking care of their kids?

KC: PATIENCE  CONSISTENCY.  NUTRITION!   Moms need to be patient with themselves, especially new moms! There is so much going on emotionally and physically after having a baby and the body needs time to adapt.  At the same time, it is important for moms to carve out consistent time for themselves each day or week to dedicate towards their fitness goals.  And nutrition!!  In order to take care of others, we need to take care of ourselves.  I learned so much more about the power of good nutrition right before I got pregnant with my 2nd baby, Abby,  when I was introduced to a system called Isagenix, which has fueled my body in ways I never knew possible.

PS: What’s the best part of being a FIT MOM?

KC: The best part of being a Fit Mom is having the ability to create a positive and healthy environment for my kids!  Children mirror what they see, so for me, it is important that my kids see a mom who takes care of herself.  Being a fit mom also allows me the opportunity to help inspire, motivate, and encourage other moms!  My current focus has been connecting with other moms (and women in general) and teaching them how to create a positive and healthy lifestyle.

PS: Where do you like to stay active with the kids in NYC?

KC: We are so blessed to live in the most amazing city in the world with endless amounts of opportunity! My girls and I love to explore all the different playgrounds that this city has to offer and run around and have fun!  One of our favorites is, of course, Central Park!  I can bring the girls and let them run around the Great Lawn while I get an awesome outdoor workout in!

PS: If you could provide words of wisdom or one mantra for other moms out there, what would it be?

KC: Self-care ISN’T selfish!  As moms, we tend to put everyone else's needs before our own, but we also have to take the time to take care of our ourselves!!

You can keep up with Kyla and her family in their latest fitness explorations  @kylacowell
